Description

These depositions have been previously copied and are on microfilm but have never been scanned to a digital format. The documents are from 1864 just days after the March 28th Charleston Riot on the courthouse square, therefore some are very fragile and some have been damaged. They have been saved by alphabetic order. Please note some individuals gave more than one deposition.

The depositions are located, in the Circuit Clerk Office, of the Coles County, Illinois Courthouse.

The purpose of doing these is so The Charleston Riot is never forgotten as time marches on. Please remember the brave men and women on both sides of the conflict. Union troops on home from furlough and locals with southern roots, known as Cooperheads.

These were scanned with the permission of Judge Mitchell Shick from October 16-18, 2014 by Sheryl Snyder and Ann Winkler Hinrichs (direct descendant of Young Ewing Winkler). They are both members of the 150th Anniversary of the Charleston Riot Committee. The Commemoration of the event will take place March 28-30, 2014 on the square in Charleston, IL. These scans were completed to be distributed during the event for further research by historians and for use by descendants of participants.
